As a matter of fact, my band's frontman has an American Performer Mustang and it had Fender flats and I couldn't get rid of that sound, either. You can spray the center section with Argent paint then immediately wipe the raised portions with a cloth with possibly alcohol or thinner to reveal the bright finish but I wouldn't use sandpaper.
